Mental Conditioning For Combat by Col Jeff Cooper SURVIVAL MINDSET

THE Best Training Video I have seen in 33 years of law enforcement. The late Col Jeff Cooper giving a lecture on mental awareness. Forgive the quality as it is an iSight camera video of a TV screen from a copy of a copy of a 35 year old VHS tape that I have treasured for decades. But it is the content that is amazing and life changing. Others in later years have tried to add colors, such as Bla...

Maxpedition Lunada EDC Day Hike gear review

The Maxpedition Lunada is the perfect small gear bag for a day hike. I usually go on half day hikes once a week on Big Pine Key, FL and often make a 'mini-camp' like today with the Air Chair and Bagpipes and hang out for several hours, munching on Saltwort or reading a book. This EDC review does not include the items I carry on my person which include a Colt 1911 .45, neck knife, Swiss Army Kni...

    Read a lot of Col Jeff Cooper’s stuff back in the 80’s when I first caught the shooting bug. I was in my very early 20’s but I knew even back then that there was more to shooting than simply shooting. This man is a damn legend.

      Yes and no. Retired now so no more neck knife/badge holder or front belt knife and ditched the pouch and went back to zippered Maxpedition mini because of off road adventure motorcycling in the Florida deep sand and as sand kept getting embedded in everything when crashing. Mostly carry the Colt Defender 1911 .45 inside the waist at 4 o’clock with spare mag in front left pocket and just hank in back left pocket. Back right pocket pistol is Diamondback DB9 (smallest 9mm). Switched to Surefire Tactician flashlight. Carry more gold including full ounce Krugerrand and about $8k total gold and still $2k cash. Started collecting nice watches and switch them every couple of days for fun. Mostly carry a fixed blade low inside front right pocket instead of folder. A Casstrom No. 10 Swedish Forest Scandi grind curly birch handle in leather clip sheath. A modified Leatherman MUT inside back right pocket closest to hip. No cigarette case but more items in the waterproof Alocsak inside the Maxpedition.

    This video is a testament that was that Cooper was the teacher that all other teachers and instructors should be held to. The part about mental preparedness in relation to making the decision is something that is timeless and needs to be talked about more within the industry. And Cooler could have just as easily been responsible for the quote, “ an elegant weapon in a more civilized time.”

    17:25 Ladies, this also goes for women who are targeted for trafficking. It's an awful game to play, but it comes down to getting traffickers to think, "Not her, she'll fight against us. Let's get someone else." Keep your head up, be aware of your surroundings, make eye contact with people. You're actually less of a target if you stare people down.

    • @MitchSnider
      @MitchSnider 4 роки тому

      I have made some changes in the years since I have retired. Some were based on all the off road motorcycle crashes I had in the Florida sand, with it getting in everything. Some of it was streamlining as I am in a 'lower risk' category now that I am no longer in law enforcement and required to engage in every law violation, just the more critical immediate ones. SCUBA season just started up though (water warm enough finally) as well as some cross country Harley rides so I will probably do one late this fall.

    Unpopular opinion: Jeff Cooper would run a Glock with a red dot if he were still around and shooting

    • @MitchSnider
      @MitchSnider 4 роки тому

      The only thing I disagree with you on that statement is that it is an unpopular opinion. Many men his age were die hard wheel gunners. Even in my profession of law enforcement it was not until about 1990 that departments finally started switching over. Of course Col. Cooper was military so the 1911 would have been part of his kit. But he did evaluate other weapons and many modifications were made to the Browning designed 1911. For his time that was the best piece of hardware available. And if you have shot one you know you can't find a sweeter trigger pull, even on a striker fired weapon like the Glock. There is also the concept of pick one gun and get really, really good with it and don't change it for the soup of the day. That was part of his Scout Rifle program concept. It is still easier to conceal carry a single stack 1911 .45 than any double stack 9mm. At least Glock made the mod 21, a .45 double stack, which is what I carried on duty for most of the back half of my career.

Legal gun carriers are held to a higher standard b/c we literally carry the ability to kill. Watched a neighbor hot wire foam and lay-up fiberglass for several years in his garage building a quickie. He put a Onan industrial engine on it. Flew nice but the engine always seemed to be temperamental. Scared him one too many times and he sold it.

    i guess it didn't take long for the Colonel Jeff Cooper Cult to have my previous comment removed. It contained no vulgarity or even real criticism of the man. I just said that while he was a lifelong student of the gun, self defense, and the combat mindset, I wondered if he had any personal experience on the wrong of a weapon whether in a self defense or combat scenario. I have not found anything to that effect in his personal writings or elsewhere. Many teachers operate in the world of theoretical and rely on the experience of others. It doesn't mean they have nothing to contribute. Of course, Colonel Cooper MAY have had such experience. I just don't know about it. Most present day practical pistol competitors have moved away from the "Modern Technique of the Pistol" though, and so have many self defense instructors. Again, this shouldn't take away from the man's contributions. Most things continue to progress. Maybe they were upset that I said I didn't really care for the man in one personal encounter with him. I also said that he was in the latter stages of terminal illness at the time, and that could have affected his disposition. I guess I am just trying to tell you members of the "Colonel Jeff Cooper Fan Club" to lighten up a little. I wasn't disparaging the man. I just wasn't stroking him either as the rest of you seem to enjoy doing.

Throw off all the programming inculcated into you by that reigning myth of modernity; namely, the Myth of Progress. As moderns, you’re actually quite feeble and indeed radically inferior to the likes of Col. Cooper.

    I read most of his Coopers Corner essays in G&A during the 80's and 90's.. I bought "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" in 98, I purchased "Art of the Rifle" in 2000, and as he would upload "Coopers Commentaries" to the internet in the early to mid 2000's I would read those. I never heard his voice until people uploaded these video's and the weird thing is he sounds almost exactly the way I narrated him in my head when I read him. Almost.
